After another exciting day of competition in North America’s Game Changers Series 3, 12 more teams have been eliminated, and the double elimination closed qualifier is in full swing.
After the first two rounds of GSL play wrapped up yesterday, each group had one more match to play with both elimination and advancement on the line.
The losers of the winner’s match and the winners of the elimination match would face off in what is known as the decider match.
The teams that advanced to the closed qualifier as the second seed from their group are WHITEOUT, One Mom Four Kittens, EQ Cerise, Tactical Throwers, CROUCHSHOOTERS, 26 Rising, Ariana Grande Perfume, dart monkeys, NMG Celeste, Solaire, VersionX, and CLG Red.
Following the conclusion of the group stage, the first round of the closed qualifier would take place.
Due to the formatting, eight teams would receive a bye and skip this round. They are Cloud9 White, Fake Aussies, Evil Geniuses, Misfits Black, Shopify Rebellion, Hamboigas, TSM X, and Gen.G Black.
While elimination was not on the line, the first round of the closed qualifier still held high stakes as teams try to avoid entering the lower bracket too early.
The opening matchups for the closed qualifier were:
With a matchup against Cloud9 White on the line, Ariana Grande Perfume showed why they deserved the top seed in their group, defeating One Mom Four Kittens 2–0 in two highly contested maps, 13–10 on Haven, and 13–11 on Ascent.
Ariana Grande Perfume advances to face Cloud9 White in the upper bracket, while in the lower bracket One Mom Four Kittens faces the loser of Gen.G Black and XSET Purple.
In their first encounter with CLG Red, Immortals continued their perfect run, winning 13–10 on both Icebox and Ascent. The members of Immortals showed off their teamplay, as they were able to work off of Sarah’s flashes and Jen’s information to secure their victories on stream.
Immortals face off against Fake Aussies tomorrow in the upper bracket, while CLG Red awaits the loser of TSM X and EQ Cerise in the lower bracket.
In a match on stream, Tactical Throwers would post identical map scores, winning both Ascent and Haven 13–6 over CROUCHSHOOTERS. On their way to their 2–0 victory, Tactical Throwers only lost two out of the 19 rounds that they were the attackers.
Tactical Throwers moves on to face Evil Geniuses, and CROUCHSHOOTERS will play the loser of hamboigas and Complexity GX3 in the lower bracket.
In another off-stream match, Team Mystic Venus displayed a dominant performance over their fellow free-agent team Solaire, winning 13–5 on Icebox and 13–4 on Breeze, winning 12 rounds in a row on Icebox to secure their trip to the second round of the upper bracket.
Team Mystic Venus will play Misfits Black in the upper bracket, while Solaire plays the loser of Shopify Rebellion and WHITEOUT/ dart monkeys.
Off stream, dart monkeys won a very hard-fought series, winning 13–7 on Breeze and 13–8 on Haven despite dropping the second map, Ascent, in a marathon 15–17 defeat. Avery played very consistently, recording 19, 27, and 23 kills to help dart monkeys get across the finish line.
Dart monkeys advance to play Shopify Rebellion in the upper bracket, and WHITEOUT will face the loser of Misfits Black and Team Mystic Venus in the lower bracket.
On the main stream, the new-look Complexity GX3 continued to wow, as they took down VersionX, 13–3 on Ascent and 13–0 on Haven. On Haven, their retakes looked stellar, as they would win 9 out of their 12 defending rounds through defusal.
Complexity GX3 faces hamboigas in the upper bracket, while VersionX looks to start a lower bracket run against the loser of Evil Geniuses and Tactical Throwers.
Once again off-stream, EQ Cerise won two hard-fought maps against 26 Rising to secure their advance in the tournament, winning 13–8 on Fracture, and 13–10 on Bind. They showed their persistence, as although EQ Cerise was a combined 17–27 in first bloods, they were able to fight through a player disadvantage more often than not to win the series.
EQ Cerise moves forward to face TSM X, while 26 Rising awaits the loser of Fake Aussies and Immortals.
In their first matchup, XSET Purple and NMG Celeste ran into a mirror match on both maps, as they would utilize the same agent composition for different results. XSET would overcome a 6–8 deficit in the first half of Ascent by winning seven rounds in a row to close out the first map 13–8 and would continue their momentum far into the second map, winning the first eight rounds on Breeze. They would eventually close out Breeze 13–3 and win the series 2–0.
XSET Purple advances to play Gen.G Black, while NMG Celeste will face the loser of Cloud9 White and Ariana Grande Perfume.
